Eating only Rabbit can kill you.

I watched an episode of a UK tv programme I like called 'QI'. It's a quiz show without really being a quiz show, based on peoples general ignorance! Here I found an odd piece of information but worthy of sharing. The topic which dominated the show was 'If you eat only Rabbit you will die'. This was taken as a huge joke at first until fully explained. Rabbit contains protein. Protein = good in most people's opinion. However, rabbit does not contain anything else the body needs, no fat which the body can use and no vitamins or other nutrients useful to survival. A diet of only rabbit can lead to starvation/death. The joke during the show was to make sure you eat Rabbit with peas and carrots. Rabbit meat actually also draws vitamins out of your body so I think you would be much better off not eating Rabbit at all. Not to mention how adorable Rabbits are, and lambs, and calve, and chicks, ducklings and piglets.....

I did find some research to back up these claims and as usual found lots of other things that really got my back up. Below is one of them. So dignified. Let them sniff life, then kill them, aren't we such a humane species....

If you have to buy meat, or if you'd like to earn some extra money, think about raising rabbits. Rabbits are popular because they have lots of babies that grow quickly into big rabbits that you can eat. One healthy doe, can produce five litters of six rabbits each year. That is about 30 kilograms of meat a year. The meat, when cooked, tastes like poultry meat: rabbit curry and chicken curry taste just the same.

When your buck and your does are living in clean, dry, safe hutches, you are ready to think about breeding your rabbits. To breed the doe, put her into the cage with the buck in the early morning or evening when it is cool. Watch her carefully to make sure she mates. It should take only two or three minutes. If she does not mate, you can try again later. After she has mated, put her back in her own cage.

Thirty one days after mating, her litter will be born. Three days before the baby rabbits are due, give the mother a nest box where she can give birth. Put a little soft, dry grass in the box and the mother will mix it with her own fur. The nest is also a warm, dry place for the young rabbits. There are usually 6 to 10 babies in a litter. The baby rabbits will not open their eyes for about two weeks. Do not touch any of the baby rabbits until they are 7 days old. If you touch them, you will change the way they smell, and the mother won't feed them. If you must touch them, rub your hands over the mother first. That way, you won't change the way the babies smell. The rabbits will be ready to eat in only four months. You can wean them at 2 months of age. When the baby rabbits are weaned, it's time to breed the doe again. Feed them for 2 more months and, when they weigh 2 kilos, they're big enough to eat.

Thank you, Jill for becoming vegan and for advocating for rabbits. As the third most popular companion animal in the USA and Great Britian, it is even a worse ethical issue tha health issue to eat them.

Hi! I just found your blog by googleing vegan mom blogs! Just wanted to say hi. My family is dairy free and we are riding the fence! I'll bookmark your page and visit frequently for inspiration.

Wow I know Vegans are uneducatedbut you really strive for the bar. Eating rabbit is healthy and safe and be an stable for people for thousands of years.

Thanks for posting this fantastic information on raising rabbits for food. I did a Google search on eating rabbits and this came up on the first page!

Thank you Jill for your great post. I agree that eating only rabbit will eventually kill you, but eating only vegan will also lead to an undeveloped body and or a body that cannot repair itself. You see your body needs 3 key amino acids that you can only get from meat. So you have to decide if you want weak body for the rest of your life. Or have great meat?!

Ridg said...

"You see your body needs 3 key amino acids that you can only get from meat."

I'm a meat eater, but this is incorrect, whilst FISH (not meat) can contain high levels of EFAs (essential fatty acids) what lean meats (like rabbit) are missing, they are also found in high levels in nuts and seeds, which can easily provide enough for the human body to survive.

I found this quite by accident as I was told something similar about rabbit meat. Good to see others out there wondering if such a thing could be true.

Btw, this was a very passionate post, and I don't pretend to understand veganism at all. In reference to being a "humane species," though, what about all of those beautiful little seedlings that grow into tomatoes until we CHOP THEM UP and throw them in ranch dressing?

Anonymous said...

Well its a stupid point because who eats just rabbit, you would have it occasionally as a great source of protein with vegetables on the side. dam hippies

I'm not vegan and I don't think it's unethical to eat rabbits. However, it IS true that a person can't be healthy on a diet consisting mostly of rabbit. As much as 'an stable' rabbit might have been for some people, it definitely wasn't first choice, and people forced to live primarily on ultra lean meat suffered from what's known as 'rabbit starvation'. So much for those uneducated vegans.

Anonymous said...

This isn't entirely true -- it's only true if you eat just the muscle meat and nothing else. You can survive off of rabbits if you eat the entire thing, organs, brain, eyes, and the soft bones. Most people can't stomach that though.

Anonymous said...

Balance is the key. Carbohydrates are necessary to fuel the body and the brain, proteins are necessary to build and repair tissue. Without any carbs you will die - whether eating rabbit or any other non-carb source. The reference to not eating rabbit meat doesn't mean protein is lethal - it means that you can't survive off a protein alone (carbs and fats are also necessary). Whether you choose to get your proteins through an animal or vegetable source is a personal choice.

Anonymous said...

Actually carbs aren't a good bet either. They'll fill you up but it's not what the body needs. The body can regulate its energy better on animal fats rather than carbs.
Agree that lean-meat(a.k.a.-muscle) doesn't have a lot to offer nourishing-wise w/o the help of the fat. Many Native American cultures avoided the leaner animals in the prey they hunted and at times hunting around spring when many prey's fat content was low due to winter.

This makes me hungry for rabbit. Just nipping outside to chop ones head off. Brb...

I don't know why I even read stuff from a source that's clearly always had plenty and lives in a very convenient industrialized society. Not to mention justifying not killing things based on how cute it is. How about "what did they ever do to you?!" So, following these thoughts to their logical conclusions it's perfectly acceptable to kill something/one that is ugly or "does something to you" try getting some real meanings to your life and quit passing judgement of people trying to live a life less dependent on the conveniences of modern society.

If you want to know what is in rabbit meat here are the facts:

Vegan or otherwise. The truth is if you eat just one thing, then you will not have a balanced diet, which is what is necessary to live. Survival is usually for a short time until you can find better. Likely not enough time to kill you if you had to 'survive' just eating rabbit. If you think about it though - why would you? There is always bark, leaves or grass (even under snow), grubs and ants. That's survival.

Hi,

Obviously I'm aware that eating only protein can kill you, but what I didn't know is that you can eat rabbits in this day and aage!

Where I live is alive with rabbits, but I had always thought that was because people stopped eating them years ago (because of myxomatosis).

I know it probably isn't what you intended, and I'm sorry for mentioning it, but I just want to thank you for the free food my family will be eating from now on!

Thanks :)

Absolute fooking bollox all of it.

Are you aware that eating almost anything exclusively will kill you from malnutrition? Also, "Protein = good in most people's opinion" is not opinion, it is fact. Protein is used for cellular growth and generation. You will die of malnutrition if you don't eat any protein. Silly vegan.

My mummy rabbit just gave birth to seven cutest little baby bunnies! they're so cute and scrumptious! Her first batch is about six months old (daddy is one of them). Wincest!

Yummy cony pies for me, can you also post some advice on rabbit fur (curing it, skinning them etc). My wife wants slippers.

"rabbit does not contain anything else the body needs, no fat which the body can use and no vitamins or other nutrients useful to survival". This is false. Sure, rabbits are lean and contain trace amounts of fat, but it does contain some. To suggest that a diet consisting of only rabbit could lead to starvation and death is ridiculous. Protein, carbohydrates, and fat are all broken down and converted into energy.

Survival depends on ones ability to extract calories out of the environment. Your body doesn't care whether they are derived from protein, carbohydrates, or fat. Under extreme conditions, the body must have calorie dense food, ie fats and proteins.

Because you believe it is unethical to eat rabbit, you look for "evidence" supporting your belief (which is biased). You have gotten it backwards. You need to look for unbiased evidence first, and then establish a belief based on that evidence.

Here is a link detailing the nutritional content of rabbits. This is science, not guesswork or opinion.

Islam prohibited eating rabbits 1400+ years ago... Its haram, i.e. a food not to be eaten. Though there is difference of opinion among different sects of Islam but on the basis of Hadith and sayings of Hazrat Ali its haram. Now we know "why"...

jeff said...

this shows a lack of understanding if you eat only one thing it will kill you,if you eat only navy beans it will kill you,if you eat only cabbage it will kill you, you need more than one item in your diet, think about it.

Its lack of information instead. World was of the opinion that earth is flat and sun orbits it but islam said 14000years ago in Quran that its round and revolves around sun and sun is moving in its own circle too. Now we know... Quran said iron came from sky, now we know. Quran says you cant escape the earth but with power (terminal velocity) now we know. Quran said all beings orginated from water, now we know. Quran says water came from sky. Now NASA tells us.

very one-sided propaganda to justify one's lifestyle. Anyone can say anything on the Internet. Be careful what you believe folks. Rabbit is one of the cleanest meats on earth.

Tomato plants want you to take their tomatoes. This is how they seed their seeds. An animal comes along, eat the fruit (or fruiting vegetable) seeds and all. The animal walks along, go far away, and poos out the seeds. This successfully spreads out the seeds. You could say humans exploit that though.
So look at this. In a way we are working in a partnership. We raise the seeds. We protect the plants from other plants. We give them good conditions to live in. We then take the fruit. We eat most and collect the seeds. We then grow more plants. This is what the plant wants. To create more plants.

The evidence shows that you cannot. However you can survive off other meats, eating the whole thing.

I looked at that site, and noticed that it contains no vitamins. No vitamins will kill you. Plain and simple.
Rabbit meat does contain stuff you need though. The quoted statement is wrong. However it does not contain all you need.
Here is what the show said.
Stephen
No . . . No, the reason is that you use vitamins and minerals in order to digest. So the more you eat, the more of your own vitamins and minerals you're using up, which you then excrete, and so the faster you die of malnutrition. And there were many cases of these trappers dying, and all they had to have was a tiny bit of vegetables and they would have survived. But they thought, "Well, we're eating rabbit; it's full of protein," as it is indeed.
http://www.freewebs.com/qitranscripts/503.htm
You need vitamins to extract the calories.

True but somethingsyou can survive off by only eating them. However most you cant.NewVeganMom used this to put her belief across that eating rabbits is wrong. The information used is probably correct however.

Eating only X can kill you.

You can insert literally any food instead of rabbit except for bananas and this will still be true. There is no point being made.

Actually, the only food that humans can survive solely on is breast milk. Not kidding.

thanks for the info on rabbits! had already watched that episode of QI (great show!) i think what they really meant was if all you eat is the muscle its not a very balanced diet. if not potentially iffy!
personally i would have a rabbit stew with extra fat and veg. not that i am cruel i just have a lack of protein in my miniscule diet due to poverty and not being allowed to farm the land.

Anonymous said...

So what your saying is rabbits are the healthiest food there is as long as its not the only food you eat. good to know for our obese country surviving off mcdonalds cheese burgers. i make gravy from my bunny drippings and im still here. email me for the recepie ull love it

Anonymous said...

I think this is more relevant if you are lost in wilderness and the only thing you can eat is rabbits.
I assume vegans try to not eat meat products so you can prevent cruelty to animals. In that case i think eating rabbits raised in your backyard and given a good environment to live in is better that eating chicken that spend all their lives in cages or calf/cows transported in cages for thousand of kilometers.

Jack Burton said...

Many millions around the world eat rabbit on a regular basis and are quite pleased with it. If one chooses to be in the 1 or 2 percent that are vegan more power to them. It means more meat for the rest of us to consume.
